He has earned the right to that rank and is entitled to have the respect even though it was not in our style. However, he cannot have a sash until he passes OUR grading system. He may wear his old belt under our uniform like a sash.

He will be taught everything that Mr Soper is currently learning. It will take some time. After that, and when invited, he can grade for our 2nd degree and gain a sash.

Black Belt grading is a test of will. He has already proven that elsewhere. All he needs to do is learn the material.

After being away from training for several years, Mr Kawharu has decided to return to martial arts again.

We wish him all the best for the journey ahead.

Instructing.

I am the Chief Instructor in the Tasman area. I am solely repsonsible for the instruction in my branches. So, please refrain from 'helping out' and offering instruction to fellow class members. Any questions should be asked directly to the Instructor.
Firstly; offering advice to those of a higher rank is arrogance. Arrogance is an attitude which will severely hinder you progress.
Secondly; Offering advice to those junior, is assuming that your own technique is correct.
Instructing is to be performed by myself, and anyone whom I specifically appoint.
If I do appoint you to Instruct, you should perform to your very best. The next time you attend training, an instructor will check to see if you have improved that technique or if you still require some assistance.

We do not make a point to single you out or belittle you when we ask you to go home and try and improve something, this is merely something we think you might need a little more work on for your rank, or for future techniques that will require your basics to be at their best. So please do not find it offensive if we give you homework.

Homework Examples:

Arthur is a yellow sash. He attends training each week and is improving at a steady rate.
An instructor notices that Arthur's weight shift for his techniques need much improvement, so he asks Arthur to try and work on his weight shift when he gets home and will be checked the next time he is at training.

Option A) Arthur does his homework, and has made much improvement in his weight shift and his techniques look and feel much better. His instructor is very pleased and commends him on his effort and gives Arthur the confidence to try a new technique.
Option B) Arthur does not do his homework, and still does not understand the weight shift and has made little improvement. His instructor notices this and expresses concern. The instructor gives Arthur the same homework, but does not give Arthur any new techniques until he understands the basics of his rank.

We hope that this way of teaching will be as beneficial to you as it will be to us. If you have any issues that will prevent you from doing training outside of regulated times, please inform us and we will aid you where we can. We want you to see that we are here to help guide you to be the best martial artist you possibly can be.

Two more awards

Sophia forgot to post the result for the main award category.

Most Oustanding Student of the Year for Blenheim 2011

Sophia-Jane Buckingham

Also-

Most Outstanding Student of the year for Nelson 2011

Anthony Pyers

"Congratulations" and "Well done" to all winners.

Awards Night

A big thank you to those who attended training on Tuesday the 20th December. However, it will coincide with our first ever awards night. There are no names on the certificates yet. Everyone has an opportunity to have their name included, right up to the end of class on Thursday 15th December. The intention is to make the event formal, as from 2012. Blenheim branch, as the longest running Tasman branch, is the 'test zone'. However, there will be a small presentation for the Nelson area.
There are plans to create a more social and interactive atmosphere in the Tasman region. Please be patient. It affects everyone. Training is to be a pleasant and comfortable experience for everyone.
Please make sure that your uniform is washed and white. Napisan is recommended for this. Ensure that you are washed. Body odour is unpleasant to other participants. Kung Fu is also about personal pride and respect for fellow practitioners and other human beings. It was an 8 hour ordeal which was endured successfully by all Candidates.

2011 training starts at Nelson this Wednesday (5th Jan), at Blenheim this Thursday (6th Jan), and Stoke this Friday (7th Jan). He is off to the USA for a couple of months. An East to West ride with his recently purchased Moto Guzzi bike. A trip from the East coast of America to the West coast and on a plane to bring his bike back to NZ. Hopefully Murray will drop in on our Oregon USA branch during his travels. Mr Humphrey will be pleased to see him. We will see you back in about 8 weeks. Don't forget to practice your Tai Chi, Murray. All the best on your journey. We wish we could be there too.
I would also like to wish Mike (from Blenheim) all the best with his 5 month tour of Dubai and Portugal. Mike is a First grade practitioner who is advancing his career in aircraft engineering. Mike is a highly talented individual who is making the most of his oportunities and 'taking the bull by the horns'. We know you will do well, Mike. Success is measured by your approach. Your family should be very proud. We'll see you back in September. Training kicks off in Blenheim tomorrow (5th January)and in Nelson on Wednesday (6th January). 2010 will be a busy year. All going well, we should have serious contender/s for Black Belt grading in November.
I would like to welcome Jaine back to our Nelson branch after an absence of a couple of years. Jaine is back from overseas and looking forward to training again. Jaine holds the rank of Green sash.
At Blenheim we welcome Doctor Tze Ying Chan to our ranks. She is with us for 2010. Formerly she was at CMA branch in Dunedin. Dr. Chan holds the rank of Brown sash.
I would like to remind those of you who are looking forward to gradings, this year, that there are specific requirements which must be met. Grading is not like NCEA where signing up qualifies you to pass. There are specific physical and mental requirements which must be met.

You cannot grade if you do not meet the syllabus requirements.

Meeting the syllabus requirements but not attending enough classes also disqualifies you.

Failing to make grading requirements due to not achieving the required amount of classes by 2 lessons, and then only showing up for 2 lessons running up to the following grading. This disqualifies you by not attending regular classes or having the required mental attitude.

Any other attitude problems will also hinder your grading invitation prospects.

Grading is not a right. It is a privilege.

Remember that there is no achievement, for anyone, if the bar is lowered so that any person doing whatever they like can pass.

Grading is not about how many boards you can break or how many sparring partners you can dominate.
If you want to achieve at Shao Chi Chuan, you must do it the Shao Chi Chuan way.
If you employed me to teach you how to become a world class Chess player, displaying your world class checkers skills will not help your cause one iota.
Finally, all of us are 'work in progress'.

And now for the Medals

Last week, during Blenheim class, Sophia was presented with the medals she won at the Queens Birthday weekend Annual Tournament in Christchurch.
For those who don't know the story:
Sophia won Gold medals in her fighting division and in the intermediate patterns competition. However, Sophia was unable to attend the prize giving so her medals were picked up by Brendan from Nelson. Brendan and his partner stayed at Hanmer for a night, on their way back to Nelson. The next morning (Sophia's birthday) his car was discovered stolen. Medals and all. After more than a month, the medals have been recovered and Sophia finally gets to see them. Well done Sophia. A great effort. The news on Brendans car was not so good. It is still missing, presumed permanently.

Fighting Words?

A belated congratulations to Brendan and Sophia for their gold medals at the CMA International Annual Tournament on Queens Birthday weekend. A great effort for a couple of first time participants. Also, Lance and Dave for their 3rd placings.
The Annual Tournament is not a fighting contest. It is a sport. Participants must abide by strict rules. Any Martial Arts match that involves any rule, at all, cannot be considered a Martial Art (self defence). It is indeed a Martial Sport. As with any sporting contest, the objective is to impress the judges into giving you more points than your opponent, or to be the first to cross the finish line. Part of the skill of crossing the finish line first, is to actually last the distance. If you burn out your tyres 3 laps from the end, then your race plan was flawed. Faltering from Injury or even being disqualified is a failure to have all the skills required to go the distance. Therefore, your technique needs to be assessed. It is not an unfortunate act of God. The All Blacks and their management would do well to remember that.
There is no such thing as a soft win or an unlucky loss.
In the future you will understand that experience will open your eyes to realising that everything can be controlled and that nothing can be taken for granted.
On the whole, a great result. My brand new notebook is now up and runnung.
You are quite correct in suggesting that any person, no matter what their rank or age, can contribute useful information to the art of Kung fu. That is indeed how we manage to keep improving the art. However, in order to offer alternatives, one must first understand the original suggestion.
In this particular case, the alternative was offered before even attempting the demonstrated technique even once. It was followed by a rather ridiculous demonstration of his alternative. My experience told me that his suggestion was an attempt to offer an option that he already knew how to perform, in order to avoid having to practice anything.
My mention of this particular student was intended to get students to listen to instruction and trust their instructors. Not to deter the asking of valid questions.
I would also like to add that this particular student is not a current student and that the mentioned incident happened several years ago. I would never place any of my students in a situation where they may be identified and draw ridicule. It is of extreme importance, to our system, that respect and trust is mutual.
Thank you for drawing my attention to the fact that I had not made myself clear enough with that message.

The answer is "No"

A student asks me if it might be 'better' to perform a specific technique another way.

Kung Fu has a history that dates back around 3000 years. Nothing short of Millions of people have learned, practiced and applied the Art in this time. Many many Masters have taught and refined the Art. Wars have been fought by soldiers depending upon the Art to keep them alive.
I then have to ask myself "Should I trust the opinion of 3000 years of expert teaching by Masters of proven ability."
OR
"Should I trust the opinion of a 15 year old beginner Kung Fu student from New Zealand who has difficulty even standing on one leg?"
I tend to lean slightly towards the former.
I trust my life with this Art. We bow to the front of the hall whenever we come up to it and before and after training.
There should be no swearing or chewing of gum or any consumption of food or drink except at events where exception is given.

Classes: If you are late you must bow to the senior instructor and wait to be asked to join the class. Inform your instructor before class if you need to leave early and bow before you do so. Never leave without permission.

Feedback & Spirit: Feel free to ask questions and discuss problems with instructors in between drills. Shout loudly when asked to, and answer "Sir" or " Madam" when spoken to.

Uniforms: Proper uniform must be worn by all graded students and instructors in training. Uniforms are adjusted facing away from instructors or partners. The Chinese style uniform is worn with the sash under the top, with the knot on the right side. Uniforms must be clean and nicely pressed. The white uniform should be soaked in 'Napi-san' occasionally to sterilize and restore its whiteness.

Shoes must be worn in training. White cross trainers or aerobic shoes are ideal but white court shoes or sneakers with a soft sole, such as 'Skellerup Commandos' are fine. Running shoes are not as suitable.

The Person: Finger-nails must be kept short and not sharp. Long hair should be tied or fastened or a head band used. Jewelery must not be worn on the limbs and large earings are not advisable. If you perspire heavily you must make sure you have a clean uniform for every training. It is a good idea to wash and/or use deodorant before training.

Greetings: Informal greetings should be in the form of our traditional salutation with the open left hand on a right fist and saying "Ch'ing". You should greet classmates and instructors in this manner. The formal greeting is to bow to instructor and kwan (training hall) before and after training. Black Belts and instructors should be addressed as "Sir/Madam/ Mr/Ms/Sh'ir Fu or Master" where appropriate.

Training partners: Proper salutations must be observed for mutual respect. Safety is most important when training with partners. Never assume that your partner has full control of his or her attacks or in their ability to defend against your attacks.

Do not volunteer instructions to classmates unless told by instructor in charge during that particular session. Your kind intentions may be unwanted or your understanding of the techniques may be incorrect.

Other Martial Artist: Be polite to other Martial Artists. Do not argue about style superiority because it is difficult to prove anything. Every art has its strengths and weaknesses therefore it is whether or not the main characteristics of the system is suitable to the individual that counts most of all.

Relocation

Tonight was Mike Soper's last training as part of the Blenheim branch. It's now time to consider your targets for improvement during the year.

Q How good are you? A Quite simply, you are as good as your weakest technique.

A Martial Artist should measure their skill the same way that the strength of a chain is determined. A chain is as strong as it's weakest link. You can reinforce as many of the other links as you like, but the weak link will fail just as quickly. Similarly, you may improve many areas of your training but the weakness still remains. This weakness is the area that a good opponent will target. The things that you are not so good at, are the things that you should practice most. Those things that you are strong at, should be practiced less often but still regularly. Aim to have no weaknesses and good all round skills. Understand that aiming for something does not necessarily mean that we will achieve it but it does give us direction. Believe that you can do it.

Article on Strangulation.

Strangulation is defined as a form of asphyxia and is characterized by closure of the blood vessels and/or air passages of the neck as a result of external pressure on the neck. It is often incorrectly referred to as choking which involves blocking, or obstructing the windpipe. Ten percent of violent deaths in the U.S. each year are due to strangulation, with six female victims to every male.
Strangulation by ligature is done with a cord like object that could include anything from a telephone cord to articles of clothing. Manual strangulation is done with the hands, forearms (as in the classic police chokehold), or standing or kneeling on the victim's throat.

Clinically a victim who is being strangled first experiences severe pain, followed by unconsciousness, and then brain death. The victim will lose consciousness by any one or more of the following: blocking of the carotid arteries (depriving the brain of oxygen), blocking of the jugular veins (preventing deoxygenated blood from exiting the brain), and/or closing off the airway, causing the victim to be unable to breathe. Only eleven pounds of pressure placed upon both carotid arteries for ten seconds is necessary to cause unconsciousness. If pressure is released immediately, consciousness will be regained within ten seconds. After 50 seconds of continuous oxygen deprivation the victim rarely recovers. To completely close off the trachea, three times as much pressure (33 lbs.) is required. For comparison purposes it only takes 8 1bs. of pressure to pull a trigger on a gun.

Fifty percent of victims report symptomatic voice changes which may be as mild as simple hoarseness or a complete loss of voice. Many victims also report that it is difficult or painful to swallow. This is due to injury of the larynx cartilage and/or hyoid bone, a small horseshoe shaped bone in the neck. Difficulty getting a breath may be due to the hyperventilation that normally accompanies a terrifying event, but more importantly may be secondary to underlying neck injury. It is critical to know that breathing changes may initially appear to be mild, but underlying injuries may kill the victim hours or days later due to decompensation of the injured structures. Involuntary urination and defecation often occurs and officers should inquire about such because victims may be embarrassed and reluctant to disclose these facts unless asked.

Visible injuries to the neck may include scratches, abrasions, and scrapes. These may be from the victim's own fingernails as a defensive maneuver, but commonly are a combination of lesions induced by both the victim and .the assailant's fingernails. Lesion location varies depending upon whether the victim or assailant used one or two hands, or whether the assailant strangled the victim from the front or back. When fingernails cut into the skin, impression marks occur and are shaped like commas or semicircles.

Scratch marks are usually superficial and long, and may be narrow or as wide as the fingernail itself. Redness on the neck may be fleeting, but may demonstrate a detectable pattern. These marks may or may not darken to become a bruise. Bruises may not appear for hours or even days. Bruises made by fingertips are circular or oval, and often faint. A single bruise on the neck is most frequently caused by the assailant's thumb. However, frequently bruises may run together, clustering at the side of the neck, as well as along the jaw lines and may extend onto the chin, and even the collarbone.

Chin abrasions are also common in victims of manual strangulation. The victim lowers the chin in an instinctive effort to protect the neck, and in so doing, scrapes the chin against the assailant's hands.

Tiny red spots (petechiae) are characteristic in many cases. They are caused by ruptured capillaries - the smallest blood vessels in the body. They may be found around the eyes, under the eyelids, anywhere on the face, and on the neck above the area of constriction. Petechiae tend to be most pronounced in ligature strangulation. Blood red eyes are due to capillary rupture in the white portion of the eyes. This phenomenon suggests a particularly vigorous struggle between the victim and assailant.

This article comes from a presentation on Strangulation in the Context of Domestic Violence run by the NZ Police.

Interesting email question.

Q. Hi I was wondering if the kung fu you teach at your school has any spirituality in it because I want to do kung fu but my Dad wont let me because he thinks it has spirituality in it. It is important to set goals for you training, but they must be realistic goals. Failure to reach an unrealistic goal is counterproductive to development of self confidence.
You should remember that progress is not a steady incline. There will be plateaus and steep rises. Sometimes you will feel as if you have not made progress for some time and other times it will feel like you have improved immensely, overnight. As long as you are improving, you are on track.
What is most important is that you do not lose confidence in your own ability to make the grade. Nothing is beyond you. It is my job to see that you make the grade required. Sometimes the next level may seem as though it is unobtainable. That is not the case. You must trust that, as your Instructor, I have the ability to lift you to the required level.
Trust yourself. Trust me. Set your sights high but do not place time limits on them. The first person to the top of the mountain, stands no higher than the last.

Merry Christmas

With less than a week of training left for 2007, I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a warm and wonderful Christmas and New Year.
Be safe and enjoy your holidays.
